On Thursday, March 8, Eagle Point Elementary in Weston hosted the 2nd annual Eagle Strut. The Eagle Strut is presented by the PTA as the major fundraiser for the school. Last year’s Strut was very successful raising over $20,000! This year’s Strut has already surpassed last years at $29,000 and counting!
The Strut consists of the Eagle Point students walking for 30 minutes around the school’s fields. The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston partners with the school. The YMCA provides prize giveaways, extra excitement and motivation, and Zumba! The PE Coach and/or PTA volunteer act as the DJ.

Lamar Silvera, Sports Coordinator, Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston, provided some motivational words to the students!
When heavy rain set in on the night before the Strut, the PTA and Fundraising Committee began to think about Plan B. According to Julie Valent, Fundraising Chairperson, “The way the Strut has to be planned, and with the more than 1,150 students participating, it would have been very difficult to do the event any other way.” Fortunately, the skies cleared just in time for the walk – and except for one very brief rain cloud, the weather was perfect.
The students and teachers like the Eagle Strut because for them it is “easy.” Money is collected over the course of two weeks – prior to the walk. Then the teachers and students show up and walk for 30 minutes! Of course, the PTA Fundraising Committee has been planning since the beginning of the school year. “The Eagle Strut is totally a school volunteer event developed and implemented by parent volunteers and encouraged by teachers. 100 percent of the profits go back to the school,” stated Julie Valent.

Last year the money raised from the Eagle Strut helped to fund technology in the classrooms, and this year the money raised will continue to support technology for the school.
