When the Cypress Bay High School FIRST Robotics Club (FRC), Greased Lighting #4379 competed recently in the FRC World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, it received the FRC Cooperation Award for its division. Winning a judges award as a rookie team is a real honor. Over 700 teams from approximately 30 different countries took part in the competition.
The team earned a trip to the World Championships after being awarded the “Rookie All-Star Award” at the FRC South Florida Tournament in Boca Raton. Students who represented Cypress Bay at the World Championships included: Renata Bade, Eric DeLa Espriella, Katie Gandomi, Robert Gitten, Andrew Goodwin, Diego Padron, Devanshi Singh, Samuel Tagger, Carmela Vallalta and Allison West.
Cypress Bay’s robot, which weighs 140 lbs., is constructed to play basketball and scored the highest number of points (three points) available. The robot also needed to navigate balance beams in the middle of the field.
The FRC is part of Cypress Bay’s efforts to grow its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
“Earning a trip to the world championship is an extremely hard task to accomplish and is quite an award for our school and team,” said coordinator Angela Ashley.
